How much should you charge for a wedding video?

If you’re starting out (or already working) in wedding videography, you’ve probably asked yourself this:

“How much should I charge to film a wedding?”

And if you’re working in a destination like the Riviera Maya — where many couples travel from abroad — setting the right price becomes even more important.

Spoiler: there’s no single answer. But there is a key factor that should guide your pricing — and it’s not just your equipment.

It’s your ability to tell a story.

Let’s break it down.

1. What are you actually offering?

Not all wedding video packages are the same.

Filming just the ceremony isn’t the same as capturing an entire wedding day and crafting a cinematic story from it.

Ask yourself:

  • How many hours are you covering?

  • Are you delivering a highlight, a documentary edit, or a teaser?

  • Are you using drone footage, professional audio, or multiple cameras?

  • Are you working solo or with a team?

  • How do you deliver the final film?

All these factors influence the price.

But there’s something even more important than gear or coverage.

What kind of film are you creating?

Some videographers simply document what happened: nice shots, good music, and a chronological recap of the day.

Others build a narrative — weaving together vows, speeches, emotions, and moments to create a story that truly represents the couple.

That difference is where the real value lies.

2. You’re not just charging for the wedding day

Many people think wedding videography is just showing up and filming for a few hours.

In reality, most of the work happens after the wedding.

Behind every film there are many hours of:

  • Footage backup and organization

  • Editing (often 20–40+ hours)

  • Color grading

  • Sound mixing

  • Music selection

  • Client revisions

  • Final export and delivery

So when you set your price, remember:

You’re not selling a day of filming.

You’re selling the entire creative process that turns raw footage into a meaningful film.

3. Experience (and storytelling) changes everything

If you’re just starting out, charging lower rates is normal.

You’re building experience, learning your workflow, and growing your portfolio.

But as your career evolves, something becomes more valuable than your cameras:

Your narrative perspective.

A junior videographer might simply capture beautiful images of the day.

A more experienced filmmaker knows how to:

  • anticipate emotional moments

  • build a story from vows and speeches

  • create rhythm and pacing in the edit

  • make the couple relive their day emotionally

That storytelling ability is what transforms a wedding video into a wedding film.

And that’s something couples are willing to pay for.

4. A general price guide for destination weddings in Riviera Maya

Prices vary widely depending on experience, style, and production level, but here’s a rough reference:

Basic ($1000–$2500 USD)

✔️ 4–6 hours coverage ✔️ Highlight video (3–5 min) ✔️ Basic editing ✔️ Digital delivery

Typically suited for newer videographers or simpler productions.

Mid-Level ($2500–$4,500 USD)

✔️ Full-day coverage (around 8 hours) ✔️ Highlight + longer edit ✔️ Drone footage and professional audio ✔️ More polished storytelling ✔️ Online delivery or USB

This is where many established videographers operate.

Premium ($4,500–$8,000+ USD)

✔️ Multi-day coverage ✔️ Teaser + highlight + documentary film ✔️ Multiple cameras, drone, pro audio ✔️ 2–3 shooters ✔️ Strong narrative storytelling ✔️ Luxury delivery options

At this level, couples are not just paying for coverage — they’re investing in a cinematic story of their wedding.

Travel fees are often negotiated separately.

Final thought: don’t undersell what really matters

Be clear about your packages.Be transparent about what’s included.

But most importantly:

Don’t undervalue your storytelling ability.

Cameras, drones, and lenses can be bought.

But the ability to see the story inside a wedding day — and turn it into a film that moves people — is something that takes years to develop.

And that’s where the true value of a wedding videographer lives.

A wedding film isn’t just a video.

It’s a story couples will return to for the rest of their lives.
